One camera. A lot to learn.
Sometimes a project should leave the screen and become something I can actually hold.
Currently building
SATURNIX Dione
SATURNIX Dione is an open-source, retro-futuristic digital camera built around a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W.
I discovered the project through its first Reddit post in March 2026 and immediately became a fan. Since then, I have been following its development and waiting for the firmware, documentation and printable enclosure files to be released.
Now it is slowly turning into a camera of my own.
Most of the hardware has either arrived or is currently on its way. The Raspberry Pi and firmware are already partially set up, but the electronics still need to be tested, connected and soldered.
Since I have never soldered before, building the camera also means learning a completely new skill. I am planning to do that at Makerhafen in Hamburg, where I can get some guidance and hopefully avoid turning the first circuit board into modern art.
The enclosure will only be printed once the complete technical setup is running. First the electronics, then the shell.
The point of making
Learning by building something real.
This is less about assembling a perfect camera on the first attempt and more about understanding how its parts work together: software, electronics, soldering, fabrication and a fair amount of trial and error.
The finished camera will be the result. The learning is already part of it.
